Montana politics has officially gone full Western.

Gallatin County Attorney Audrey Cromwell is asking the Montana Supreme Court to decide whether Attorney General Austin Knudsen can use “supervisory control” over her office after a dispute involving local law enforcement, ICE, and nonpublic information.

That is not just legal paperwork. That is a classic Montana showdown: local authority versus state power.

So yes, the cartoon says it plain: when Helena shows up with a lasso labeled “takeover,” Gallatin County shows up with a court filing.

Not so fast, cowboy.

Montana has always respected local control, county independence, and the idea that government closest to the people should not be treated like a saddle horse for state politics.

Let the Supreme Court sort it out. But until then, this one deserves a little satire.
